Dilaasa > About Dilaasa

An Overview

Dilaasa is the first hospital-based crisis centre in India designed to respond to the needs of women facing violence within their homes and families. The Centre was established in 2001 at K.B. Bhabha hospital, Bandra, Mumbai, as a joint initiative of the Public Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT), a Mumbai-based multi-disciplinary nongovernmental institution promoting and supporting socially-relevant health and related research, action, services and advocacy. Dilaasa represents the first attempt in India to sensitise the public health system to domestic violence through the establishment of a public hospital based crisis centre. It is currently being run independently by the BMC, as a department of the hospital, staffed with one full time social worker, one part time social worker, one part time nurse and one part time occupational therapist. CEHAT only retains the role of monitoring and evaluation. In 2006, a second Dilaasa department was set up independently by the BMC at K.B. Bhabha hospital, Kurla.
