About Child Sexual Abuse

Child abuse has been defined as sexual contact by force, trickery, or bribery where there is an imbalance in age, size, power, or knowledge.

Contact can inc
lude all of the following actions:
-Fondling
-Obscene phone calls
-Exhibitionism
-Masturbation
-Intercourse
-Oral or anal sex
-Prostitution
-Pornography

Any other sexual conduct that is harmful to a child's mental, emotional, or physical welfare. The above mentioned acts may consist of a single incident or many acts that occur repeatedly over a period of time.

Abusers are generally known to the child and most often either a family member, neighbour, family friend or someone that the child knows well. Therefore, given the fact that the abuser is well know, the child may be afraid to report abuse. This accounts for why child abuse is so under reported. Again, like in domestic violence, children are taught to preserve family honour at all costs, and this is another major reason why child abuse is generally not reported.

***If you or anyone you know, is facing such forms of child abuse - please read further about what steps you can take - from the sections for: Survivors and Caregivers.
