The role of Health Care Providers in VAW cases

As health professionals, you have a legal and ethical obligation to respond to survivors of violence in a comprehensive manner who may be victims of violence and provide them with care. This care goes beyond mere treatment of physical injuries to identification of the root cause of ill-health, provision of psychosocial care and referral to appropriate agencies in cases of violence.

Below are five important steps you must remember when providing health care to survivors of violence.

These are :

  1. identifying abuse,
  2. providing emotional support,
  3. providing medical support,
  4. documentation and
  5. referring.

Each of these roles have been explained in detail in the subsequent sections.
