Specific role of HCP's in cases of sexual assault

As a health care provider, you have both therapeutic as well as medico-legal responsibilities in cases of sexual assault. The ultimate goal of the health care providers should be to establish a "Comprehensive Response to Survivors of Sexual Assault". The components of the Comprehensive Response are as follows:

- Providing necessary medical support to the survivor of sexual assault
- Establishing a uniform method of examination, evidence collection
- Informed consent for examination and evidence collection and informing the police procedures.
- First contact psychological support and validation after the traumatic experience
- Maintaining a clear and fool-proof chain of custody
- Referral to appropriate agencies for further help (eg. legal support services, shelter services etc.

This section provides additional resources, specific to dealing with cases of sexual assault.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON EACH OF THE COMPONENTS, AS WELL AS A MODEL PROFORMA FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN HEALTH FACILITIES, ARE AVAILABLE IN THE 'MANUAL FOR MEDICAL EXAMINATION IN SEXUAL ASSAULT'.

Each of these roles have been explained in detail in the subsequent sections.
